Ziauddin Barani was an Indian Muslim historian and political thinker of the Delhi Sultanate, born in Baran (modern-day Bulandshahr) to a family of scholars and administrators. He served as a "nadim" (boon companion) to Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq for 17 years, giving him close insight into court affairs. His major works, Tarikh-i-Firuz Shahi and Fatawa-i-Jahandari, cover the political and social history of the Delhi Sultanate and reflect his distinct philosophy of history rooted in moral and religious accountability. He is regarded as one of the greatest Indo-Persian historians of medieval India, valued especially for his emphasis on impartiality and critical assessment of rulers rather than mere praise. His writings remain foundational sources for the study of medieval Indian history and historiography.
