Qazi Abdul Sattar (1933–2018)
Qazi Abdul Sattar was an Indian Urdu novelist and short story writer, born on 8 February 1933 in Machreta near Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh. He completed postgraduate studies at Lucknow University and joined Aligarh Muslim University in 1954, later serving as a Professor of Urdu there until his retirement in 1991. He was known especially for historical fiction, with acclaimed novels such as Dara Shikoh, Shab Gazida, Ghalib, and Salahuddin Ayyubi, alongside "Peetal ka Ghanta," his most famous short story. His work earned him the Padma Shri in 1974 and the Ghalib Award, cementing his place among modern Urdu literature's leading fiction writers. He died on 29 October 2018 in New Delhi, remembered as a prolific chronicler of historical and literary figures.
