Hasrat Mohani

Hasrat Mohani, born Syed Fazl-ul-Hasan in Mohan, Unnao district, was an Urdu poet, journalist, and Indian freedom fighter known for coining the slogan "Inquilab Zindabad" and for his romantic ghazal poetry. He was a founding figure of Urdu-e-Mualla journal and held key roles across the Indian National Congress, Muslim League, and Communist Party of India, which he helped establish, and was jailed multiple times for his anti-British writing and activism. His notable works include Kulliyat-e-Hasrat Mohani and Sharh-e-Kalam-e-Ghalib, and his ghazal "Chupke Chupke Raat Din" became widely popular through renditions by Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh. After independence, he served in India's Constituent Assembly, and he is remembered as a rare figure who fused revolutionary politics, Sufi spirituality, and lyrical Urdu poetry into one legacy.
