Syed Ehtisham Hussain was a leading Urdu literary critic and one of the guiding figures of the Progressive Writers Movement, credited with giving Urdu criticism a new Marxist-influenced direction. Born in Mahul, a village in Azamgarh, he studied at Aligarh and Allahabad, later chairing the Urdu department at Allahabad University. His major works include Urdu Adab Ki Tanqeedi Tareekh, Tanqeedi Jayzey, and the travelogue Sahil Aur Samandar, drawn from a 1952 Rockefeller Foundation-sponsored study tour of the US. He remained a central voice in Urdu criticism until his death in 1972 in Allahabad.
