Shaukat Siddiqui was a Pakistani novelist and journalist, celebrated as one of the leading voices of Urdu progressive fiction. Born in 1923 in Lucknow, he earned his BA and MA in Political Science before migrating to Pakistan in 1950, eventually settling in Karachi. He is best known for his novel Khuda Ki Basti (1957), a landmark work depicting the struggles of post-Partition slum-dwellers, which won the Adamjee Literary Award and has been translated into more than two dozen languages. His other major work, Jangloos, is one of the longest novels in Urdu literature, exploring class struggle across rural Punjab. Alongside his fiction, he had a long career in journalism, eventually becoming editor of several Karachi newspapers, and was active in the Progressive Writers Association until his death in 2006.
