Mir Taqi Mir, born Muhammad Taqi in Agra, is regarded as the leading Urdu poet of the 18th century and one of the founding figures of the Urdu ghazal, often called Khuda-e-Sukhan ("God of Poetry"). Mir was the first poet to demonstrate the hidden beauty and genius of the Urdu language, weaving together the dialects of Agra, Delhi, and Lucknow into his verse. His complete works, the Kulliyat-e-Mir, comprise six divans and over 13,000 couplets across forms including ghazal, masnavi, qasida, and rubai, with his masnavi Mu'amlat-e-Ishq ranking among Urdu's greatest love poems. Marked by personal loss and hardship, his poetry is known for its emotional depth and melancholic tone, themes that shaped his enduring reputation.
