Hakim Nasir Khusraw

Nasir Khusraw was a celebrated Persian poet, philosopher, traveler, and Ismaili scholar, regarded as one of the most important literary and intellectual figures of 11th-century Persia. Born in 1004 in Qubadiyan, near Balkh, he served for years in the Saljuq administration before converting to Ismailism around the age of forty, after which he devoted his life to writing and religious scholarship. He undertook a seven-year journey across Central Asia, the Middle East, Egypt, and Mecca, recorded in his famous travelogue Safarnama (Book of Travel), still valued today as a historical record of the regions he visited. His poetry, largely philosophical and devotional in nature, includes the Rawshanai-nama (Book of Light), while his prose works, such as Jami al-Hikmatayn, sought to bridge Ismaili theology with Greek philosophy. He is often called the "Hakim" (the Sage) for the depth of his philosophical and spiritual writing, and remains a revered figure in Persian literature and Ismaili thought.
