Agha Hashar Kashmiri, born Muhammad Shah in Banaras, was an eminent Urdu poet, playwright, and dramatist known as the "Shakespeare of Urdu." He moved to Bombay at 18 to write for the New Alfred Theatrical Company, producing acclaimed works like Mureed-e-Shak, Shaheed-e-Naz, and Yahudi Ki Ladki, many of them Urdu adaptations of Shakespeare. He was the first Muslim playwright awarded a Gold Medal by Banaras Hindu University for his contributions to Indian theatre. He later moved to Lahore to pursue film production but died before completing his first film in 1935, and was buried in Miani Sahib graveyard. He remains a foundational figure in Urdu drama, with his work continuing to influence theatre and early Indian cinema.
