Hafiz Mehmood Khan Shirani was a noted Indian researcher, linguist, and poet, born in Tonk, Rajasthan, in 1880. He memorized the Quran in his youth, studied Persian, and later earned degrees in Lahore before beginning his teaching career, joining Islamia College, Lahore in 1921 and later Oriental College, Lahore in 1928. He is best known for his research theory "Punjab Mein Urdu," arguing that Urdu originated in Punjab rather than Delhi, a claim that made him a major figure in Urdu linguistic scholarship even though later scholars challenged parts of it. He was the father of celebrated Urdu poet Akhtar Sheerani. He died in 1946 in his native Tonk, remembered as one of the foremost researchers in the history of the Urdu language.
