Maulana Shibli Nomani

Shibli Nomani was a renowned Islamic scholar, historian, and poet from British India, widely regarded as a founder of Urdu literary criticism and historiography. Born in Bindwal, Azamgarh district, in 1857, he was a versatile scholar of Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Urdu. He founded the Shibli National College in 1883 and later established the Darul Musannifin (House of Writers) in Azamgarh to promote scholarly research. His most celebrated works include Al-Farooq, a biography of the second Caliph Umar, and Sirat-un-Nabi, a landmark multi-volume biography of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that he began writing and which was completed after his death by his student, Sulaiman Nadvi. He passed away in 1914, leaving behind a body of work that remains foundational to Urdu Islamic scholarship.
