Noon Meem Rashid

(1910–1975)
Noon Meem Rashid (born Nazar Muhammad) was a pioneering Pakistani poet, widely regarded as the father of Modernism in Urdu literature. Born in Alipur Chattha, Punjab, he studied economics at Government College Lahore, served briefly in the Royal Indian Army, and later worked with All India Radio and the United Nations. He became the first major exponent of free verse in Urdu with his debut collection Mavra (1941), followed by works like Iran Mein Ajnabi and La Musavi Insan, and was honored by Faiz Ahmed Faiz with the title Malik-ush-Shoara (King of Poets). He died in London in 1975, and his birth centenary was widely celebrated in 2010, cementing his legacy as one of Urdu poetry's most influential modernist voices.
