Saghar Siddiqui, born Muhammad Akhtar in Ambala, was a Pakistani Urdu and Punjabi poet known as the "Poet of Pain" for his romantic, melancholic verse. He developed an early love of poetry under a family friend's guidance, migrated to Lahore after Partition, and quickly gained fame for his soulful ghazal recitals. He worked as a poet, writer, and editor, but later fell into poverty, depression, and drug addiction, ending up homeless on Lahore's streets. He was posthumously honoured with the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, and died in 1974, found on a roadside near the Mall Road, buried at Miani Sahib graveyard. He remains one of the most celebrated lyrical poets of the subcontinent, remembered as much for his tragic life as his enduring verse.
