Akhtar Husain Raipuri was a Pakistani scholar, literary critic, journalist, and short story writer, born on June 12, 1912, in Raipur, then part of British India's Central Provinces. He graduated from Aligarh University before earning a PhD from the Sorbonne in Paris, and was fluent in Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Bengali, French, and English. His 1935 essay "Adab aur Zindagi" (Literature and Life) is regarded as the founding text of Marxist literary criticism in Urdu and laid the philosophical groundwork for the Progressive Writers' Movement. After migrating to Pakistan, he worked in the education department and later for UNESCO, alongside translating and writing short fiction, including the collection Gard-e-Raah. He died in 1992, remembered as one of the key intellectual architects of Urdu's progressive literary tradition.
