Sheikh Muhammad Ikram, known as S. M. Ikram, was a Pakistani historian, biographer, and littérateur, born in Chak Jhumra, Lyallpur (British India). He served in the Indian Civil Service from 1931 and later the Civil Service of Pakistan, eventually becoming Director of the Institute of Islamic Culture, Lahore, until his death. His major works include a three-volume critical biography of Ghalib and his magnum opus, a three-volume intellectual history of Muslim India and Pakistan (Mauj-e Kausar and related volumes). He received an honorary D.Litt. from Punjab University and the Pride of Performance Award in 1971. He died in 1973 while working on two further books, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the foremost historians of Muslim India and Pakistan.
