About the Author

Rasheed Ahmad Siddiqui

(1892–1977)
Rasheed Ahmad Siddiqui was a leading Urdu essayist, satirist, and humorist, born in Mariyahu, Jaunpur district, in the United Provinces of British India. He studied locally before moving to Aligarh, where he worked as a court clerk to support his education, later joining Aligarh Muslim University's Urdu department in 1922 and eventually becoming its chairman. He is best known for works like Mazameen-e-Rasheed, Khandaan, and Ganjhae Giranmaya, and for his autobiographical Ashufta Bayani Meri, which reflects his lifelong bond with Aligarh. Noted for mild satire, impressionistic criticism, and a lively style, he is considered to have few equals in Urdu literature. He died in Aligarh in 1977, remembered as one of the 20th century's most distinctive Urdu prose stylists.
